Models in Primatology - an attempt to reveal the secret life of primates - Julia Lehmann

Friday 18th Feb, 5:15pm, 1W 2.7

In primatology the majority of research is concerned with observational and/or experimental work. However, models have become crucial to understand evolutionary pathways and the cost and benefits of certain behaviours which can not be observed directly. I am particularly interested in the factors shaping animal social systems and social behaviour. One system, the so-called fission-fusion social system in which individuals can vary their degree of sociality constantly, is a particularly interesting system. I will present some of my work on the potential costs and benefits of fission-fusion sociality in primates along with a general overview of how models can help to reveal the hidden life of primates.
